Imagine if it all it took to cure chronic pain and discomfort in the body was a pin prick. Now imagine that in addition to this, that same pin prick could help ease the severity of neurological conditions, regulate sleeping problems and the cardiovascular system, or stabilize respiratory conditions, menstrual disorders and long-term skin conditions. It’s not a dream; for thousands of years, acupuncture has been finding the solutions to the medical mysteries of modern day research.

The practice of acupuncture can be traced back to ancient Chinese medicine, with a developmental history that spans thousands of years. As part of an integrated system of healthcare known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture practices an ancient brand of medicine which seeks to ease pain and ailments in the body, and prevent future irregularities. The methods and beliefs incorporated in the treatments are some of the oldest in the world and are today becoming increasingly popular.

Most significantly to us however, there is proven success in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, sporting injuries and chronic pain. Acupuncture is a great complement to the techniques of chiropractic care. Similar to the chiropractic approach to health care, the practice of acupuncture seeks to establish a natural equilibrium in the body; one that promotes healthy and normal function. Chiropractor Adelaide

Technically speaking, acupuncture involves the insertion of a number of tiny needles into specifically identified points around the body. These points are said to connect with key organs and channels within the body which control energy flows. It is said that when a blockage occurs within these energy channels, illness is the eventual result.

Adapting these methods and beliefs into those of conservative Western medicine has not been without its difficulties. However, medical scholars have acknowledged research which suggests that the insertion of these special needles really does allow for the release of natural pain killers (endorphins) and natural relaxants.

Given the astonishing results and the holistic approach taught through acupuncture, Dr Andrija, and many other adelaide chiropractors, use acupuncture regularly with his patients. He’s seen great success with the management of chronic conditions and the relief of pain. Not only does it provide drug-free, effective pain relief, but also treats the underlying causes of disease, preventing further deterioration or development.

With regular care and management, along with the principles of a healthy lifestyle, we believe our patients can achieve the best out of their treatment on the path to a lifetime of general well-being.

If you have any questions regarding the practice of acupuncture or how chiropractic care can benefit your health, please do no hesitate to ask any one of our doctors at your next consultation. Chiropractor Adelaide

Whether it’s through advertising, in movies or professional recommendation, we’re all familiar the baby walker. On the market in varying forms since 1851, the device was first designed to support young infants, usually up to a year old, who cannot walk to move from one place to another.

As technology and advertising has developed, the popularity of the baby walker has increased. But whilst manufacturers are producing an increasing number of walkers, an ever-growing number of medical doctors and alternative health professionals are asking parents to pay heed to warnings about their use.

Many consider baby walkers to be effective tools for simulating the act of walking in small children. This however, is not correct. Industry-commissioned research suggests that, in actual fact, the use of a walker can lead to locomotor problems and distorted walking patterns. Furthermore, if walkers act to replace the crawling stages of development, children can be looking at hindered cognitive development associated with natural evolutionary learning processes. Chiropractor Adelaide

When an infant is growing and developing, it’s body is changing and strengthening at a rapid pace. Everything that a baby or toddler does affects the way their spine and nervous system develops – ultimately impact the quality of health they enjoy during growth and in later life.

Using a walker when a child is too young or seemingly not ready can grossly affect bone strength, growth and muscle coordination. This is because if a child is not ready to cope with certain physical pressures on their spine, unnatural behaviours may occur and lead to long-lasting developmental issues. Research also backs these claims, suggesting that prematurely forcing children to assume an upright position was visible in later stages of life compared to those that did not use a walker.

But more than this, the dangers can also be more obvious. Research has also shown that as many as one in three infants who use walkers suffer significant injuries including skull fracture, concussion, spinal fractures, finger amputations and in some cases, death.

If you’re concerned about the health of your child’s spine or have any concerns about the toys or tools they’ve been engaged with, please don’t hesitate to bring it up at your next visit to us. Our Chiropractors in Adelaide can assess the developmental phases of a child’s development and help boost their spinal and immune health – giving them the best start to life possible. Chiropractor Adelaide

Usually, these stories come from those whose health philosophies and practices conflict with those of chiropractic.

It is important to understand the facts, based on solid research and peer-reviewed findings.

Here, we’ll go through some of the most common misunderstanding associated with the chiropractic profession and set the rumours straight.

Spinal adjustments hurt

Chiropractic adjustments are scientific techniques, practiced to provide relief and pain management for a wide variety of problems. For some people, this relief can even be immediate. Only in acute cases of pain and degenerative problems can there be some short-term discomfort. Some patients report feeling discomfort following their initial treatment, however we take this to be a sign of the body adjusting and adapting to find it natural equilibrium once more. These cases are rare and with continued care will ease and improve. Chiropractor Adelaide

Spinal adjustments are dangerous

Unless performed by a person not qualified or without tertiary qualifications in the field, manual adjustments are completely safe. Just as doctors are required to be registered by the commonwealth government in order to practice, so too are Chiropractors. If you have been adjusted by anyone other than a qualified chiropractor, osteopath or naturopath in the last ten days it is vital that you consult with a health professional as this is the only situation in which spinal adjustments can pose a threat to your wellbeing.

Chiropractors lack education compared to Medical Doctors

In today’s education system, students of chiropractic spend as much time in clinical practice and the classroom as medical students. Furthermore, with the improvements in technology, resources and educational standards, the practices of Chiropractic care have also improved.

The methods of chiropractic care are not scientifically proven

As a profession that has been prominent in the world since 1895, chiropractic has always endeavoured to provide the utmost in care and support for its patients. Especially in the last 20 years, chiropractors have established an array of scientific research programs to further improve, develop and hone the techniques used to treat and heal patients. The Australian Spinal Research Foundation provides research funding for Australian chiropractors to continually build the knowledge base of chiropractic in the scientific research journals.

Chiropractors only treat back pain

A central focus of chiropractic care is the spine, as it is critical to proper function of the nervous system and a healthy functioning body. However, chiropractic techniques can also help to treat a wide range of sports induced injuries, age-related degenerative disorders and pain in any part of the body caused by injury or accidents.

If you have any concerns or questions, please rest assured that at Walkerville Chiropractic you are in capable hands. If you do have any concerns or feel uncomfortable at any time during your adjustment or treatment it is important that you let the doctor know. We believe in creating a friendly, satisfied and supportive environment for all of our patients and your wellness and care is our top priority.

Unfortunately, it’s very common for young children to experience the pain and distress of ear infections; and it’s not an uncommon occurrence in adults. Almost 50 per cent of children will develop an ear infection in their first year and just over 66 per cent suffer the same condition in their first three years. The causes are varied; they can occur from trapped substances (like water or wax) within the ear, or can be the result of respiratory infection.

During an infection, fluid builds up behind the eardrum causing significant pressure and inflammation. Irritability, pain, temporary hearing loss, even fever can result.

Many children develop multiple infections over the course of their childhood – this can be an indication that their nervous system is not functioning as it should be.

Walkerville Chiropractic Chiropractor Adelaide has successfully treated both adults and children with ear infections, and has seen some marvellous results in preventing the development of further and varying infections.

This is because chiropractors used a variety of tried and tested methods to align the spine, help the nervous system back to its optimal level and promote the best in health and wellbeing.

The tendencies in western medical circles are to prescribe antibiotics to treat the growth of bacteria in the ear, not all of which are bad. However, this can be ineffective if the root cause of the problem is not bacterial. Other practices also encourage surgery and invasive procedures.

At Walkerville Chiropractic Chiropractor Adelaide we believe that these problems can often be dealt with in a much less invasive and more natural way. Regular adjustments can prevent the drainage of fluid and help to restore function to the areas which are most problematic for young children. Not only does this prevent them from developing problems in the ear canal, but also promotes a level of wellness they can carry through life for better growth, development and health.

If your child is prone to illness and infection, we urge you to discuss the natural alternatives to relief with either Dr Andrija or Dr Goran at your next consultation. Both doctors have seen incredible results in young patients – many of which have been happy, healthy patients for decades!

Posture can tell you a lot about the health of your spine, and your general wellbeing.

If posture is out of balance, then there is likely to be an irregularity in the spine, putting unhealthy pressure on the nervous system. This phenomenon is called “subluxation”. Whilst many people believe that some sort of trauma is to blame, the reality is that daily wear and tear can lead to an imbalance or irregularity – this includes, sleeping, standing, walking; even emotional stress, work, sport and the birth process can be to blame. Chiropractor Adelaide

Chiropractors believe that a fully functioning spine, and thus nervous system, can significantly improve health and helps to achieve an optimal level of wellbeing for all individuals. Early detection of abnormalities and subluxation is the best way of treating the problems and associated symptoms. While its important to get a chiropractor to fully and accurately assess your health, there are a couple of ways you can quickly assess your families posture and look for the signs of subluxation.

The following steps will help you to observe and record the postural condition of each member of your family.

Instructions:

Participant stands with feet shoulder-width apart and toes parallel then closes eyes and nods head back and forth twice, bringing head back to the middle. Keep eyes closed for 10 seconds while observer check shoulder and hip levels.

Observer: stands facing the participant and lightly places index fingers under the participant’s ears, noting which is higher. Then place index fingers on top of the participants shoulders, noting which shoulder is higher. Then place index fingers on top of the participant’s hips. Note which hip is higher.

If you notice that either of the ears, shoulders or hips is higher than other, this might be a sign of subluxation in the spine. Discussing the matter with any of the chiropractors here at Walkerville Chiropractic is the best way to clear up any doubt and begin the process of fixing any worrying issues. A full examination, and in some instances – Xray – can establish the progress and severity of any subluxation or, indeed, any other musculoskeletal issues.

Keeping your family’s posture in good order ensures a happy and health team of individuals. If you have any questions or concerns about your family’s health and the development of their spine, have a chat to either Dr Goran or Dr Andrija Chiropractor Adelaide during your next visit. Full and comprehensive evaluation and treatment is the best way of tackling any issues before they become a major problem. Our chiropractors are fully equipped to address issues of this nature and are more than happy to help you achieve the best from your body.

Osteoporosis affects a large proportion of both Australian men and women annually. In addition, a large number of deaths occur from complications to fractures and falls associated with the brittle bones and immobility that comes with the condition.

Medical doctors are often quick to prescribe medications to alleviate the pain and some of the symptoms that come with the condition, but rarely treat the route cause of the problem – bone degeneration. The reality is, there are many natural ways of treating osteoporosis and many options available to increase the bone density to both deal with and prevent the condition.

Weight bearing exercise is by far the most important component for bone strength. In addition to regular exercise, which helps to promote mobility and keeps circulation flowing normally, regular chiropractic care can help the bones to maintain health working order and slow down the processes of aging.

Recently, a number of research studies have uncovered that a number of natural supplements are also helpful in reversing, slowing or preventing the onset of osteoarthritic conditions.

Chiropractor Adelaide

Various forms of calcium (e.g. carbonate, citrate, citrate-malate) and vitamin D, as well as ipriflavone, have all delivered positive results in helping to improve bone density in older Australians and sufferers of musculoskeletal conditions.

A fibre derived from the horny goat weed (also known as yin yang huo) has also proved to be highly effective in this instance, and has an ability to increase bone density in the hip and lumbar spine in postmenopausal women. Unlike synthetic imitations, previously used widely in the medical profession, the Icariin found in this family of plants has had marvellous results, and is all natural. A number of studies have found that icariin can inhibit osteoclastic activity of the bones (the process of breaking down bone tissue) and have therapeutic properties.

Bones also require a host of other nutrients. Vitamin C, zinc, copper, manganese and B vitamins (provided by a good multivitamin and mineral supplement) are all excellent promoters of a strong immune system. The best source of these nutrients also comes from food sources – green leafy vegetables, fruits and legumes provide all the supplementation you need. Combined with a healthy lifestyle and frequent weight bearing exercise, a recipe for long-lasting optimal health is readily available.

Currently, the trend by practitioners is to provide pharmaceutical options for the pain and suffering of osteoporotic patients. However, the chiropractic profession is gaining ground and voice in their fight to turn the attention to more natural and less problematic options. Pharmaceuticals have shown to be effective in advanced cases; however the number of side-effects observed in patients and the dangers that can be involved are seriously concerning.

The chiropractors here at Walkerville Chiropractic are able to counsel patients on preserving and improving their bone density and preventing the onset of bone disease. We do this through a holistic approach to health; promoting the importance of health and overall wellbeing in a happy, friendly and supportive environment.

Therefore, it’s logical that we see that a large number of people come through our clinic with postural stress related to computing and sitting at desks.

The problems we see at Walkerville Chiropractic are varied – anything from forward head posture, ligament damage, carpal tunnel, soft tissue damage, elbow pain and general strain.

Just as the causes are varied, so are the treatments. They range from spinal adjustment, soft tissue work, varying physiological modalities, right through to workplace ergonomic assessment.

In fact, this is the best way of addressing the problem and preventing further or re-occurring damage.

Let’s start with the elbows – the joints that bring us the most repetitive stress injuries. Resting the elbows and the wrists on hard surfaces is not only painful, but can can cause tenderness of the bones. Using a simple wrist support, or adjusting the work bench so that you’re elbows aren’t resting on a hard surface is often enough to prevent any unnecessary problems and pain.

Postural issues, particularly sitting all day, also present themselves as major issues in Australian health today. Rounded, slouching shoulders and forward posture create undue stress on theneck, back and limbs. Excessive strain over a long period of time can lead to weakening of the bones and muscles, loss of hydration around the ligaments and joints (leading to tenderness and inflammation) and headaches.

Furthermore, the body simply wasn’t built to sit all day long! The lower back and lower extremities are weakened and more prone to injury when assuming this position without change on a repetitive and frequent basis. Joint function is also jarred and reduced, also. Regular exercise can combat this, but if you’ve been sitting for far too long without movement, the risk of injury or stress when doing physical work is significantly increased.

There are many ways to improve posture and physical health in the workplace, or wherever you may use a computer. Positioning the screen to keep the neck in a neutral and natural position as often as possible can reduce stress on the spine and limbs. Getting proper lumbar (lower back) support, with a good chair, can also reduce the chances of pain and discomfort. Ensuring that your vision is clear (i.e. you are not straining or leaning in to see the screen) is also key in ensuring an ergonomically sound work space.

It’s not just computers that pose a problem, though. Many Australians do not exercise regularly or frequently enough and believe that just because they’re not in front of the computer, they’re not doing any harm to themselves. If you consider the lifestyle of many – this is simply not the case. Millions of Australians spend the day sitting at a desk in front of a computer, then sit in the car/bus/taxi/train/tram on the way home and spend the rest of the evening on the couch. Regular exercise, a healthy diet and ongoing systematic health care is important to maintain a health lifestyle and optimal health. Regular chiropractic maintenance care will ensure that you get the best out of your health and also helps to alleviate the problems associated with today’s relatively immobile lifestyles.

If you believe that your work space needs a change, but you’re not sure where to start, why not discuss your concerns with any of the chiropractors here at Walkerville Chiropractic. They will talk you through the process and are able to make recommendations based on your health, personal needs and concerns.

You’ve probably had some Apple Cider Vinegar sitting in the pantry for months, but you’ve probably never considered drinking some once a day. It may come as a surprise to many people, but apple cider vinegar is an extremely affective natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains a plethora of vital minerals and elements like potassium and magnesium that help to fight off disease and illness.

Organic apple cider vinegar is made from fresh, organic apples which have been allowed to mature in wooden barrels. This process allows them to boost the beneficial qualities of natural fermentation and herein lies the difference between the processed varieties which you often find on supermarket shelves. The final product is a brown liquid, rich in enzymes and minerals that clear varieties do not contain. Ideally, the pH level is between 5 and 7.

While the thought of drinking straight apple cider vinegar may seem somewhat unappealing, rest assured that combined with two tablespoons of honey and a glass of water, two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar each day has some significant benefits on your overall wellbeing.

The pectin component of apple cider vinegar helps reduce high cholesterol levels ad helps to regulate blood pressure. In addition, its consumption helps with the extraction and retention of calcium from fruits, vegetables and meats therefore helping to maintain excellent bone health. Potassium also helps growth and development in children and helps to strengthen hair, nails, teeth and improves sinus tracts.

Dr Andrija is a strong believer in the benefits of apple cider vinegar and the all-round benefits it provides to his patients. He often prescribes it to those suffering from joint pains, as the malic acid is helpful in breaking down fungal and bacterial infections and dissolves the uric acid deposits that form around joints with time, causing them to become brittle and sore.

On the whole, this natural ‘wonder drug’ works well to combat constipation, headaches, arthritis, weak bones, indigestion, high cholesterol, diarrhoea, eczema, sore eyes, chronic fatigue, mild food poisoning, hair loss, high blood pressure, obesity, cellulite, acne, bad breath and even body odour.

Remarkably, the side effects are minimal; just remember that as with most acids and vinegars, excessive use can lead to dental enamel degradation so it’s important to keep your teeth healthy and clean.

Chiropractor Adelaide

With such a large number of Dr Andrija’s patients reaping the rewards of Apple Cider Vinegar, combined with their continued chiropractic care, Walkerville Chiropractic will soon be stocking an organic Apple Cider Vinegar available for you to purchase. Keep your eyes peeled and if you would like any more information or have any questions about specific health concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask any one of our doctors or friendly staff.

A child’s spine and the body is incredibly flexible and mobile and so even minor stresses can impact the function and create tension during the volatile stages of development.

The nervous system controls everything that people, and children, do – from breathing and digesting to running, playing, thinking and feeling. Interference and damage to the system can significantly impact a child’s ability to function at their very best.

Interference and subluxations (the term used by chiropractors for vertebrae and joints that aren’t moving correctly) can often reduce health without obvious symptoms; there are occasionally signs that indicate that a child’s nervous system may need some attention.

Regular chiropractic care from the time a child is born can greatly reduce the chances of injuries and conditions both early and in later life, especially scoliosis. In addition, regular care can help a range of common childhood conditions such as colic, asthma, allergies, chest and ear infections and behavioural problems.

Chiropractor Adelaide

Just as with adults, maintenance of the spine can also lead to improved flexibility, strength, general health – all of which are important for growing bodies and brains!

However, there are some misconceptions that chiropractic techniques are not appropriate for the fragile and changing bodies of children, however, this is not the case.

Just as each person and child is different, so is their care and their adjustments. Chiropractor uses gentle, effective techniques adapted specifically for children depending on their age, size and individual bodies. In fact, getting your children examined, particularly during growth stages, will help their bodies develop to their best.

Furthermore, it teaches them from an early age the importance of maintaining a great level of health and helps them to discover ways to look after their bodies – lessons they can take through life with them.

Walkerville Chiropractic has a large number of Chiropractic Kids all feeling the benefits and rewards of early-life adjustments. The decision to bring your child to visit a chiropractor is one that we would greatly encourage. If you have any questions regarding your child’s spinal health and development, please do not hesitate to ask any one of the team at Walkerville Chiropractic.

Many people have an idea of what they think a chiropractor does. However, when asked to verbalise this, few people will say much more than “it’s something about aligning the spine”.

It’s true that the spine is the most common tool used by a chiropractor. What most people don’t know is the reason why a chiropractor places so much emphasis on the spine. The reason is that the spine has a very intricate relationship to the central nervous system which consists of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. This system is responsible for the regulation and control of virtually every function of the body. Our body can perform its functions to the best of its ability when this control and communication system is working optimally.

Problems in the spine can occur due to injuries, arthritis, wear and tear, poor posture and many other causes. When the spine is affected by these things, it will experience a change in its alignment and its ability to move in a normal capacity. These changes will send distorted signals up the spinal cord to the brain to tell it that something is wrong. If the injury is severe enough, pain, weakness or numbness may be consciously felt, although this is not always the case. Either way, the brain may respond by producing changes in muscle tone and/or a number other functions.

All of these neurological mechanisms are foremost in the mind of a chiropractor when caring for a patient. A chiropractor will begin by discussing a patient’s history with them to try and determine any contributing or causative factors for the injury as well as any other relevant health information. A subsequent physical examination (including postural assessment, spinal range of movement measurement, feeling the position of spinal structures and any relevant neurological tests) is then performed to identify where any spinal problems may exist. Spinal X-Rays are also a very valuable method to help the chiropractor select the safest and most effective treatment techniques.

Once all of the diagnostic procedures have been completed, a chiropractor will recommend a strategy to restore the patient to as high a state of health as possible. This strategy will usually include a series of chiropractic adjustments to the spine in order to restore functional alignment and mobility. If supporting muscles have been affected, soft tissue therapy can be applied to them necessary. As part of a long term management plan, a chiropractor may prescribe exercises to reinforce correct patterns of movement and supportive muscle tone, which can be a valuable inclusion.

Some patients choose to limit their chiropractic experience to pain relief and resolution of conditions. Others choose to incorporate chiropractic care into a more holistic lifestyle including proper diet, exercise and other wellness producing practices. These patients often get the best results from seeing their chiropractor regularly and preventing new problems from occurring.
